Global Data Visualization Meetups

Shared online events with Meetup groups around the globe

It all started in 2020…

The COVID-19 pandemic had forced all of us to change to online events, and many groups stopped having events at all. In 2021, I started organizing free, joint-online Meetup events with multiple Data Visualization groups around the globe.

The idea is that all of the participating groups post the event with an online link to the same online meeting or webinar. The host group runs the event, but members can attend the online event from anywhere in the world.

My hope is that the benefits of these joint events are:

  • Provide ongoing events and content for groups to share with their members

  • Keep members engaged, especially when in-person events are not possible

  • Help groups offer events from speakers that are not nearby and avoids travel costs

  • Help speakers that are volunteering their time to reach larger audiences

  • Promote sharing and conversations in the larger data visualization community

  • Give sponsors a larger audience when they support dataviz community events

Participation is voluntary for all of the groups. I’m the Organizer for the Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin and Silicon Valley Data Visualization Meetup Groups. In addition to my groups, the following groups have participated or helped promote our events:

If you are a DataViz Meetup organizer and are interested in sharing future online shared events with your members, please CONTACT me for details. We are always looking to include more groups.

Any DataViz Meetup group can be the Host group for an event. If they have a speaker event that is shareable and appropriate for everyone to promote, they can let the rest of the Organizers know the details to post to our local membership. The Host group runs the event, and of the other DataViz Meetup group Organizers are encouraged to create an event on Meetup for their group promoting the Event.

So far, we have had Joint-Online events hosted by the groups in Dallas/Fort Worth, New York, Washington DC, and Utah.
